How to Receive International Payments in Pakistan as a Freelancer
Published September 29, 2026
Getting paid by international clients is one of the first practical hurdles new Pakistani freelancers face. Here's how the main options compare.
Payoneer
Payoneer remains the most widely used option among Pakistani freelancers, largely because it integrates directly with major platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com) and offers a local Pakistani bank withdrawal option. Funds typically arrive in your Payoneer account instantly or within a day from platform payouts, with withdrawal to your Pakistani bank account taking a few business days.
Wise (formerly TransferWise)
Wise is popular for direct client payments (rather than platform-based work) due to its transparent, generally lower fees and competitive exchange rates compared to traditional bank wire transfers. It's especially useful if you invoice clients directly rather than through a freelance marketplace.
Direct Bank Wire Transfer
Clients can wire payments directly to your Pakistani bank account, though this typically involves higher fees and less favorable exchange rates than Payoneer or Wise, plus more paperwork on your end to justify the incoming foreign currency to your bank.
Why the Banking Channel Matters for Tax
Beyond convenience, how you receive payment affects your tax treatment. To qualify for the lower Section 154A tax rates on freelance/IT export income, funds generally need to come through approved banking channels — see our freelancer tax calculator and our Section 154A explainer for details.
Practical Recommendation
Most freelancers working through platforms use Payoneer for its ecosystem integration; those with direct international clients often prefer Wise for cost efficiency. Many experienced freelancers end up using both, depending on the client and payment source.
