How to Get an NTN Number in Pakistan

Tax & Finance

An NTN (National Tax Number) is the basic identifier FBR uses to track your tax obligations — you need one before you can file a return, become a filer, or (for freelancers) register with PSEB.

What You Need

Your CNIC, a valid mobile number and email address (registered in your name, ideally), and basic personal/employment details are generally sufficient to register for an NTN as an individual.

The Registration Process

Registration happens through FBR's IRIS portal. You create an account, verify your mobile number and email via the codes sent to you, and complete the registration form with your personal details. For salaried individuals, you'll typically need your employer's NTN as well. The process is free and can usually be completed in one sitting if you have your documents ready.

After Registration

Once registered, your CNIC effectively functions as your NTN for most purposes (Pakistan largely uses CNIC as the tax identifier for individuals now, rather than issuing a wholly separate number). You can then proceed to file your annual tax return through the same IRIS portal.

Common Issues

Registration problems most often come down to mismatched personal details (name spelling, mobile number not registered in your own name via NADRA/PTA verification) or using an email/mobile already linked to another IRIS profile — double-checking these details before starting saves time.

Do You Need a Tax Consultant?

For simple salaried registration, most people can complete this themselves. If you have freelance income, multiple income sources, or business income, a tax consultant can help ensure everything is classified and declared correctly from the start.
